How to Style Your Home for Autumn: Warm Colours, Faux Florals & Seasonal Details

There is something about the first hint of autumn that makes us want to change everything at home.

The evenings begin to draw in, the light becomes softer and suddenly those warmer, richer colours start to feel right again. Autumn decorating doesn’t have to mean covering every surface in pumpkins either. For us, the best seasonal interiors are layered gradually, using colour, texture and a few carefully chosen pieces to create a home that feels warmer and more atmospheric.

From rich faux botanicals and woodland-inspired details to deeper shades of burgundy, mocha and russet, here are some simple ways to bring autumn into your home.

Start with a warmer autumn colour palette

One of the easiest ways to make a room feel more autumnal is through colour.

This season we’re particularly drawn to earthy, slightly muted shades rather than very bright orange. Think mocha brown, russet, burnt orange, burgundy, moss green, sage and warm honey tones.

You don’t need to redecorate an entire room. Introducing just two or three of these colours through cushions, florals, decorative accessories and smaller seasonal pieces can completely change the feel of a space.

Brown and burgundy work particularly well together if you want something richer and moodier, while sage, moss green and honey tones create a softer, more relaxed autumn look.

Use faux autumn flowers to add colour and height

Faux botanicals are one of our favourite ways to update an interior as the seasons change.

A few carefully chosen faux autumn stems can instantly introduce colour without making a room feel overly themed. Hydrangeas, eucalyptus, chrysanthemums, peonies and trailing amaranthus all work beautifully during autumn.

For a simple arrangement, start with foliage such as eucalyptus or a woodland branch to create shape and height. Add two or three larger flower heads, such as hydrangeas, before finishing with smaller stems or something cascading to soften the arrangement.

Try mixing:

• Mocha hydrangeas with olive and umber eucalyptus
• Burnt orange peonies with weathered sage foliage
• Burgundy amaranthus with russet chrysanthemums
• Moss green hydrangeas with honey-gold flowers

The key is not making everything match perfectly. A slightly gathered, natural-looking arrangement often feels much more considered.

Style autumn wreaths beyond the front door

An autumn wreath is one of the easiest seasonal updates, but it doesn’t have to live outside.

Of course, a wreath looks beautiful on a front door, particularly against darker paint colours or traditional woodwork, but autumn wreaths can also work really well indoors.

Try hanging one above a console table, resting one against a large mirror or layering it into shelving for a more relaxed look.

A woodland-style wreath with foliage and natural textures gives a room an autumnal feel without looking too obviously seasonal.

Add an autumn garland to mantels and consoles

Garlands are another easy way to introduce autumn texture.

An autumn garland can be draped across a fireplace, console table or sideboard, or used through the centre of a dining table.

Rather than arranging it too perfectly, allow some of the foliage to fall naturally over the edge. You can then layer in candlesticks, decorative objects or a few smaller pumpkins to create a fuller display.

If your garland already contains plenty of detail, keep everything around it fairly simple. Seasonal styling usually looks more expensive when there is still some breathing space.

Bring in subtle woodland details

Woodland-inspired decorating works particularly well for autumn because it naturally introduces those earthy colours and textures.

Branches, acorns, foliage and smaller decorative animals can all add character without dominating the room.

A single woodland branch in a tall vase can look just as effective as a large floral arrangement, particularly in an entrance hall or on a console table.

Smaller felt or woodland decorations are ideal for shelves and decorative branches where you want a little seasonal personality.

Layer your autumn decor rather than changing everything at once

You don’t need to transform the whole house on the first day of September.

We actually prefer autumn styling when it builds gradually.

Start by changing your florals and adding one or two richer colours. As the weather becomes cooler, introduce heavier textures, cushions, throws and more atmospheric lighting.

Then, as we move further into the season, add wreaths, garlands, pumpkins and more obvious autumn details.

It creates a much more natural transition from late summer into the cosier months.

Don’t forget lighting

Lighting makes a huge difference during autumn.

As natural daylight becomes softer, lamps become part of the atmosphere of the room rather than simply something practical.

Table lamps placed on consoles and side tables create pools of warm light and make darker corners feel much more inviting.

We particularly love pairing warm lighting with rich brown ceramics, textured stone finishes and deeper autumn colours.

Create an autumn moment rather than decorating every surface

Sometimes one really good seasonal display is all a room needs.

A console table with a large vase of faux autumn flowers, a statement lamp and a few carefully chosen decorative pieces can completely change the mood of a hallway or living room.

The same applies to a mantel, dining table or sideboard.

Choose one area to focus on and build your autumn styling around it rather than spreading lots of smaller decorations throughout the room.
